What is Hydrotherapy?

Detailed information about hydrotherapy and what it can help with.

Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy. The physical properties of water are used to decrease the effects of gravity and provide assistance, support and resistance for exercises.

The following problems can be addressed by the use of hydrotherapy:

Pain – The temperature of the water (approx. 35ēC) helps to reduce pain and aid relaxation.

Decreased range of movement – By reducing pain and weight-bearing, as well as using buoyancy and the drag of the water, range of joint movement can increase.

Muscle weakness – Water can be used as optimal resistance for strengthening weak muscles.

Limited weight-bearing – By varying the depth of immersion weight-bearing can be progressed (the deeper the water the less weight-bearing).

Reduced fitness – Decreased loading on lower limb joints during immersion in water may enable more strenuous activity that otherwise may not be possible on land.
