March 2009
In the world of physiotherapy ‘Hydrotherapy’ is now known as ‘Aquatic therapy’! There are various reasons for the change, but predominantly it is because our international colleagues have been using this term for sometime.
A recent article in ‘Aqualines’ (which is published by the Aquatic Therapy Association of Physiotherapists’ - ATACP) studied the rehabilitation of patients with shoulder injuries, fractures or post shoulder surgery. It showed that in warm water arms were ‘lighter’ and more relaxed, therefore making it easier to perform an active-assisted exercise programme or an active programme.
The article commented that the active-assisted phase of rehabilitation is often difficult to perform on dry-land. It showed that in water a smaller amount of muscle activity was required to move the arm compared to when the arm was moved on dry-land. It recommended aquatic therapy in the early stages of injury or post-surgery. Aqualines 2008
