Hydrotherapy Post fracture and surgery

Post fracture and surgery

All Major Orthopaedic surgery is dependent on its rehabilitation process to return the patient back to their pre-surgery state and hopefully well beyond. All injuries / corrections / or fractures normally require a period of non movement to help protect the area.

After the surgery or plaster removal the limb is normally very stiff and painful to move in any direction. There is normally associated muscle wasting and swelling. There are often restrictions to weight bearing to protect the area of the surgery and a gradual return to normal is required.

Properties / benefits of Hydrotherapy

  • The warmth of the water helps with relaxing muscle spasm.
  • The pressure of the water helps with improving the circulation of the area and the skin which in turn, helps to reduce the swelling associated with immobility.
  • Mobility can be graded with the shallower the water the more weight through the limb.
  • Joint range of movement is improved as the swelling and muscle spasm reduces.
  • The water can be used to encourage movement and then to resist movement later in the process.

Hydrotherapy Case Study One

This gentleman was referred for Hydrotherapy after his Achilles tendon surgery and 10 weeks in a plaster cast. His surgeon gave strict instructions to limit the weight through his limb after his cast and gradually increase his movement. A Hydrotherapy environment was perfect for this type of rehabilitation program.

"Hydrotherapy played an important and hugely positive role in my recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon.  Working in the pool allowed me to exercise soon after surgery, building confidence and speeding my recovery. This combined with the fantastic support and guidance made a big difference - I'd highly recommend it."

Hydrotherapy Case Study Two

This gentleman had a Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI).This is a condition affecting the hip joint. It is characterised by abnormal contact between the hip bone and the hip socket. This 27 year old gentleman had a 4 year history of right hip pain and weakness with decreased hip range of movement.

"Last year I had an operation to correct an F.A.I (femorol acetabular impingement). I had some cartilage removed as well as some bone from my right femur head. After the op, I was on crutches and only able to bear partial weight on the leg. Within a week of my surgery I was able to take part in 2 hydrotherapy sessions a week at hydroactive.

My hydro sessions were important as they gave me the chance to walk without crutches, strengthen the cartilage and surrounding muscle tissue and generally get the joint moving freely and back to normal. The sessions I had were also important as I was able to do little else at the time in terms of exercise. After a couple of months of treatment from Emma and Tamsyn I was well on my way to making a full recovery and getting back to running as well as exercising in the gym"

Hydrotherapy Testimonial

"I have been attending hydrotherapy sessions for the past two months due to knee immobility and complications following surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. The intensive program of hydrotherapy I have received from Tamsyn has been excellent.

The exercises given have been totally focused on my particular problem and both Tamsyn's professional knowledge and support have been invaluable. My condition always feels much improved after each session and would highly recommend hydrotherapy to those in need."
