What does Hydrotherapy treat?

Hydrotherapy can benefit many different conditions.
Please click on any of the below for more details.

HydroActive Ltd is able to offer a treatment and exercise programme tailored to suit the individual’s needs and specific condition. The aim of hydrotherapy is to ease pain and reduce any swelling as well as increase the range of movement; progressing towards increasing muscle strength and general fitness.

Testimonial of patient following Hydrotherapy

Following a shoulder decompression and tendon manipulation operation in February I started to suffer nerve pain in the right shoulder by April and thus was unable to carry out some of the intended recovery exercises.

Only when I started hydrotherapy sessions with your hydroactive physios at Teddington in the summer did I gradually gain the flexibility needed to complete the stretching needed for recovery. The warmth of the environment and the extra support of the water meant that the shoulder could operate and be stretched over a range that was impossible in air / on land.

Within a few weeks I was reaping the benefit in greater strength and flexibility so that I have been able to start reducing the amount of Gabapentin that I am taking. The physio instructors are always very clear and helpful  and the low patient / physio ratio ensures that I am working correctly at all times. It has been so helpful to me that I intend to continue the sessions for sometime yet.

Hydrotherapy FAQ's

What will I need?
You will need to bring a swimming costume, a towel and shower gel.

What happens if I can’t swim?
Do not worry if you cannot swim. A physiotherapist will be with you in the water at all times and a lifeguard will be on the poolside. If you are fearful of water you can exercise in the shallow end and hold onto the hand rails.

How do I get in the pool? Access to the pool is via steps with hand-rails if you are able, otherwise a hoist is available to those patients who are less mobile.

What are the side-effects?
The warmth of the water and the exercise may make you feel tired afterwards.

When is hydrotherapy not appropriate?
You will be assessed by a physiotherapist before your first hydrotherapy appointment. Certain conditions may prohibit you from hydrotherapy.

These include:
• Wound or skin infection
• Viruses/stomach upset
• Raised temperature
• High/low blood pressure
• Breathing difficulties
• Some kidney problems
• Angina/heart problems
• Incontinence
• Infection

How hot is the water?
The water is approximately 35ºC. This is a comfortable warmth.

Is there any parking?
Yes. There are spaces allocated for hydrotherapy users. There is also a pay and display car park for Teddington Pool and Leisure Centre. After 6:30pm you can park in Vicarage Road.
